This project presented us with a unique opportunity to examine activism through a modern, and distinctly young, lens.

We collaborated closely with local activists, filmmakers and journalists to find suitable protagonists and to establish a healthy relationship with all those whose spaces we were entering. We knew that we needed to connect with our subjects on a personal level in order to build a solid foundation of trust between our crew and our subjects. We sincerely believe that that trusting relationship is well documented throughout the film.

For them, we aren't a foreign media organization coming in and dramatizing their stories. To our subjects we are comrades; we are the same age, we often share similar feelings, we laugh about the same jokes and deal with our anxieties about the world in similar ways, but most importantly, their problems are our problems. We aren't journalists to them, we are friends.

It was only through this slow building of our relationship that we were able to get such an intimate portrait of our protagonists innermost struggles.

By hearing their thoughts and accompanying them on many events and meetings, we were able to get an in-depth look into how exactly activism is changing their lives.

Through observational shooting we were able to follow our protagonists not only at the frontlines, but also at organizing meetings, debates, and even catching up with their friends.

We also collaborated heavily with state organizations (both at home and abroad), local filmmakers, and respected journalists to ensure the safety of our crew while filming on the frontlines in Hong Kong and Chile. This incredible preparation allowed us to bear witness to the brutal realities that frontline activists in these countries experience everyday. And our established intimate relationship with our subjects allowed us to capture the human cost of these huge moments in history.

2020 has clearly not been without its trials but we had the opportunity to collaborate one more time with our protagonist in Hong Kong and get an update on the situation there during COVID and with the new pro-Beijing security law being passed. This update brings a welcome third dimension to the project and provides further insight into the life of an activist who is dealing with threats both visible and not.

Lastly, we are putting the film through a robust fact-checking process with independent experts in order to represent the numbers and scale of these movements as accurately as possible.

"Dear Future Children" will capture all the energy, anger and ingenuity of the young activists who feel ignored and the type of impact their actions have had around the world. While the entire team is heavily invested in this project, we have done our best to ensure that the lens through which this film has been created is a dispassionate one. Our goal was to present these activists and movements as they are and with all the successes and failures that come with being a young person in the modern world.
